Cooksville Phantom Cubs IP Program

Cooksville Phantom Cubs

Cooksville is looking forward to another great year of Timbits Phantom Cub hockey. This Initiation Program (IP) is for players 4, 5 and 6 year olds who are interested in learning how to play hockey. No experience is neccessary – we will teach your child the basics of hockey (i.e. skating, puck handling, passing, shooting) in a fun format, with a Saturday morning practice and a Sunday morning game at the Mississauga Valleys Arena from September to March.

One important note is that the Intiation Program is not a learn to skate program, however, we will take a 4, 5 or 6 year old and improve his ability to skate through this program.

Cooksville will run the Hockey Canada Initiation Program, which develops specific hockey-related skills during practices. The Phantom Cub program is all about having fun and learning and the coaches all work to ensure this is the main goal at all times.

Our first few weeks will be dedicated to practices with skill development. During this period the players will be evaluated and split into groups based upon their skill level. Each group is given a different jersey (Leafs, Canadians, Penguins, Panthers etc.) and during the Saturday practice they work on drills appropriate for their skill level.

Sunday games utilize the entire ice surface, with timed 3-minute shifts. Players within each group are assigned to the ‘black’ or ‘white’ team for the game. This ensures each player plays on a ‘shift’ against a line of similar skill level. Goalie equipment will be available should your son/daughter be interested in taking a turn at being a goalie during a Sunday game.

The cost includes all expenses related to ice time for both practice and games. Each player will receive a team jersey and pair of hockey socks, a team and individual photograph, the year end awards day banquet and a trophy.

All players must wear full equipment, helmet, mask and hockey neck protection etc. and the equipment must all be CSA approved.

Every year, we have a parent’s meeting before the season starts to discuss the program and answer any questions you may have.

Volunteers Needed!!!!!

Running a successful program like the IP Phantom Cubs program requires volunteers to help out on the ice. Here is your chance to bring your skates, helmet, gloves and stick and join us every Saturday for the instructional practice and be on the bench for the Sunday games. The enjoyment of working with these hockey stars and learning the basic coaching skills make this a very worthwhile pursuit. The opportunity to participate with these young children will bring many hours of enjoyment, not only to the children, but to yourself.

The Cooksville Hockey Association coordinates a Hockey Canada Initiation Program Clinic in the fall for all coaches and volunteers in the Cooksville Phantom Cub program. This one day clinic is a great introduction to getting involved in teaching and coaching minor hockey.

Select 6 Team…………

In addition to this program, mid way through the year we also form a Select 6 team from the players in the IP program. This team is primarily made up of 6 year olds and is intended to help prepare them for Minor Novice the following year. This team buys additional ice time in order to learn ‘positional play’ and rules such as ‘offside’. Near the end of the season, we arrange a few exhibition games against other associations and we enter the team into the Erindale Laurie Williamson Tyke Hockey Tournament. Families of players on this team wll pay for all costs associated with this team. More information will be communicated once it becomes available.
