Checking at the A level

In light of the concerns about brain injuries and concussions, the MHL is looking at ways to minimize this danger to our players. Statistics suggest that removing checking may reduce the risk. Therefore, it’s an option that we are debating.

The MHL would not remove checking from our A division unless it was mandated by the OHF and the GTHL. This action would put our players at increased risk when playing ‘checking approved” teams in tournaments and exhibition games.

Hockey is a physical sport and checking is a part of the game that has attracted Canadians for over a century. When performed well, checking is a skilled and exciting way to separate the puck from your opponent. Should it remain a part of the game?
